When buying gold, it's all about weight. But sometimes less is more. Helena Krodel of the Jewelry Information Center shows you what you need to know before you go to buy gold.

How to buy gold jewelry
  • The most important thing to remember when buying gold jewelry is the purity. Pure gold is 24 carat gold. This is 99.9 percent pure gold.
  • Sometimes gold combined with other metals to make it stronger or more affordable.
  • Look on the back of a piece for a marking. It will show you how much pure gold is in that piece of jewelry. It may say 18k, which is 75% gold, or 14k, which is 58.5% gold.
  • When gold is combined with different alloys it can create different colors of gold. There is white gold, but jewelery makers also have the ability to change the color to rose, or green or even brownish gold.

Remember:

  • Always look for the quality mark when buying gold
  • Pure gold is 24 carat

Hi I'm Helena Krodel of Jewelry Information Center for howdini.com and today I'm going to be talking about how to buy gold jewelry. The most important thing to remember when buying gold jewelry is the purity. Pure gold is 24 carat gold and here we have an example. This is 99.9% all gold. Now sometimes gold is combined with other alloys to make it a little bit stronger or sometimes more affordable.

Now here we have 18 carat gold, that's 75% gold. And then we have an example here of a quality mark. Now that is going to show you how much quality gold is in that piece of jewelry. Again 75% gold is 18 carat and then we have 14 carat gold which is 58.5%.

Now when we combine gold with different alloys it's going to give you different colors of gold. So we have white gold here and then there's also the ability to change the color of gold to rose or green or even brown sometimes. And that's how we buy gold jewelry. I'm Helena Krodel of Jewelry Information Center for howdini.com.
