If your Christmas shopping includes picking out toys for children, beware! Some of the most popular toys can pose safety issues where children can get hurt. The Most Treacherous Toys of 2013 list includes toys made, licensed or sold by big brand names. Here’s a sample of toys to stay away from:
–Sonic Sound Sizzlers Noise Magnets by JA-RU Inc.
While the toy is meant for older children, the possibility of any child swallowing magnets continues to be a high concern.
Two of the toys on the most treacherous are mock weapons, and when not used safely, and can really hurt another kid:
–Max Steel Interactive Steel with Turbo Sword by Mattel.
It’s a rigid plastic sword that can cause serious injury. En garde!
–Nerf N-Strike Jolt Blaster by Hasbro
The “gun” packs a powerful shot of rubberized darts which can cause eye injuries. The manufacturer’s instruction say the toy should not be loaded with other items but we guess that’s a possibility!
–Big Rock & Roll Ball Pit by Little Tikes is meant for children 3+
It comes with lots of warnings about adult supervision but shows children playing alone on the outside of the package. You may want to reconsider buying this for really little kids.
Several of items on the list pose choking hazards for children 4 and under. The list is published annually by experts in consumer safety, the New York Public Interest Research Group (NYPIRG). You can read the whole report here.
Remember, even if you are steering clear of these toys, be aware there are safe ways to toy shop. Read the packaging, especially the age warnings which follow strict guidelines.
