How to shop for heirloom tomatoes
- Heirloom tomatoes are best bought locally because they’re too delicate for long-distance travel. This means if you live in a colder climate you’ll have to enjoy them as a seasonal treat each summer.
- Don’t be put off by the brownish bruising and scarring on an heirloom tomato, this does not affect the flavor or texture of the delicate fruit; it is an indication of ripeness.
- Heirloom tomatoes come in an amazing variety of colors and shapes. Not all tomatoes are perfectly round or red! For instance, slice open a green zebra tomato and see that it is ripe and ready to enjoy.

How to shop for heirloom tomatoes
Hi, I’m Martha Drayton from Whole Foods Market. Today we’re going to talk about heirloom tomatoes. Heirloom tomatoes are enormously popular. Many customers are confused, when they pick up an heirloom tomato, about the mottling and scarring you see along this portion of the tomato. Don’t worry. This is a sign that the tomato is ripe, fresh and ready. They come in amazing colors; and when you slice them, you’ll see they are ripe and delicious. I'm Martha Drayton for Whole Foods Market and howdini.com.
