How to maintain heart health with herbs and supplements
Heart disease is the #1 killer of American men and women. However, recent research indicates that a balanced diet augmented with herbs and supplements can not only safeguard you against heart disease, it can even reverse existing damage. Ms. Bolster says herbs and supplements are right for everyone, and it's never too early to start taking them.
Note, however, that you should talk with your physician before starting any herb or supplement regimen, particularly if you are taking birth control, anti-depressive or blood thinning prescription medicines.
Mary Bolster recommends five supplements for a healthy heart:
- Fish oil supplement - This is the best overall addition to your diet. Make sure it contains EPA (Eicosapentaenoic Acid) and DHA (Docosahexaenoic Acid).
- Psyllium - This soluble fiber is available as Metamucil or Serutan, and should be consumed with lots of water to help control cholesterol levels.
- Plant stanols and sterols - These also help control cholesterol levels, and can be taken as a supplement. They are increasingly found in other food products such as sandwich breads, salad dressings and low-fat yogurt.
- Carnitine - An amino acid that is available in either liquid or powder form.
- Multivitamin - It is important to not forget this old standby. Take one a day.
Mary Bolster recommends these heart healthy herbs and supplements for everyone and points out that it's never too late to start taking them. However, remember to check with your doctor before beginning any new supplement or vitamin regimen.
