New York Times Bestselling Author, Lori Gottlieb, shares her tips and tricks on how to create a reading list. Hint, step one is getting organized!
How to create a reading list
Hi. I'm Lori Gottlieb. My list of books that I want to read is so long, it's crazy. I've got to get them organized into a reading list. So the first thing I'm going to do is take all of the books that I've hoarded under my bed or stacked into corners and break them into two categories, fiction and nonfiction.
And then, I'm going to break it into genres. For fiction, I might do things like classics, comedy, romance, thrillers. And for nonfiction, things like history, biographies, memoir, and research. If you have an eReader like this one, you can do the same thing by classifying them on your device.
Now that I have a good understanding of what types of books I have, I can see what I don't have and fill in the gaps. But before I decide what to buy, I like to get some opinions. Usually, I'll ask my friends what they're reading, but I always consider the source. Just as there are certain people I wouldn't ask for fashion advice, there are certain people I wouldn't ask for book recommendations either.
I can also check the local library, surf the web for suggestions, and skim Twitter's book related conversation chains. I like to consider a variety of topics and discover new authors. Online eBook retailers are a perfect place to explore. They have thousands of authors and titles already categorized, so skimming lists of award winners or bestsellers is easy. Hey, there's mine.
Now that I'm organized, I need to make a list. This eReader has a feature called collections that allows me to group my titles right on the device. I might even use this for a book club. And now, the fun part. Time to read.
Sometimes, I like to take notes in the margins. And with eReaders, I have the option of taking freehand notes or highlighting sections of text. I can even export my notes to my computer using the included software.
So go ahead and create a personalized reading list. Get organized and get reading. I'm Lori Gottlieb for Sony with Howdini. For more great ideas, visit sony.com/howdini.
