Women warriors make men nervous. Actually, women warriors make everybody who isn’t on their side nervous. I assume that’s because women warriors are often extremely effective in changing the status quo. Time will tell whether the latest army of activist women, Eco-Moms, will be as successful as, say, Mothers Against Drunk Driving, or the suffragettes, or the Women’s Health Movement, which brought all of us, men and women, patients’ rights.
But this weekend those of us who read a certain Paper of Record were treated to a slightly snarky article entitled “For Eco-Moms, Saving Earth Begins at Home.”
“Perhaps not since the days of “dishpan hands” has the household been so all-consuming”, said The New York Times. “But instead of gleaming floors and sparkling dishes, the obsession is on installing compact fluorescent light bulbs, buying in bulk and using “smart” power strips that shut off electricity to the espresso machine, microwave, X-Box, VCR, coffee grinder, television and laptop when not in use.”
Apparently, to The New York Times, the specter of nine thousand women who are actively trying to de-tox their lives is amusing. The Times makes fun of them because they are upper middle class women who live in big houses and have lots of things, most of which have the effect of making global warming worse. But these women are trying to make their homes more environmentally friendly, and reduce their carbon footprint. And the Eco-Moms are just one of a growing number of women’s groups who’ve banded together to improve their family’s, and the planet’s, environment.
So get over it, New York Times. Besides, we don’t know anybody who isn’t at least beginning to find ways to live more eco-consciously.
And that’s why Howdini is proud to introduce our newest category, Green Living. In it you’ll find ways to green your home, to shop and cook organically, to treat some ailments with herbs and supplements, and to understand what the new eco-vocabulary terms mean.
So spend some time in Green Living. You just might get inspired to go on a low carb(on) diet.
